Day 3 - Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Center and Bead Factory

Today was filled with Nairobi local points of interest. The day started with our driver Stephen taking us to the David Sheldrick Elephant orphanage. This was outstanding. The orphaned elephants (for many reasons) that are located, are brought to the preserve for raising them from less than a year old to approx. 5 years of age, at which time they are prepared for release back to a herd into the wild.

The bead factory was the next stop. This facility was founded to employ single mothers, to provide meaningful employment manufacturing the beads (from local clay to glazing) which are then used for earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and other final product completed by hand entirely on site for sale. Naturally, we could not leave empty handed (see pic w/red circle).

Then onto the Nairobi Giraffe center. While we were able to get up close to the giraffes, the experience was very similar to feeding the giraffes at the Columbus Zoo.

Finally, there was a local lunch and a little more shopping. The REAL safari adventure starts tomorrow! Hop in the Land Rover to Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara National Preserve.
